HOW TO WISH A HAPPY NEW YEAR IN SPANISH
What do Spaniards the 31st of December?
Opposite to most of the countries I know Spanish celebrate this night with family, it is a social party too, of course-we are Spanish! But we have dinner (a late one, even more than usually, for those who already think Spain has crazy meal timetables J) with the family and at 12 o’clock, pretty much every person is watching the TV with 12 green grapes in front of them, why? Because when the main clock in Spain, located in Puerta del Sol, in Madrid, start the 12 bells (we call that campanadas) we need to eat the 12 grapes, one for each “campanada”, one for each month of the year, where does this tradition come from? To be honest no idea, there are several theories, but…nothing sure.
There are some people, lucky ones who went to the main square in the big cities and have them there kind of live instead in front of the tv, and once we eat the grapes is time to get crazy and start hugging and kissing everyone around wishing the best year ever.
Once all that craziness passes we usually meet friends and go out, but keep in mind that that won;t happen at least until 1am…so normally is a really long night J which is not ideal as the 1st of January we celebrate the new year…how? With a big family lunch :S
Ah!Of course as most of the human being we love to make list with resolutions and goals we will accomplish, and like most of the human, they stay there, in the piece of paper :S.
What do Spaniards say?
We have several ways to wish a good year ahead, some you can use are
!FELIZ ENTRADA Y SALIDA DE AÑO!
!TODO LO MEJOR PARA EL AÑO NUEVO!
!QUÉ EL AÑO NUEVO TE TRAIGA SALUD!
