Spanish idioms with the word hand Hola amigos, as you know once a month I love to give you a little inside of the Spanish language and culture, and I do that through idioms, and this time, I am going to use the word “hand” in the idioms, mano.

I do not know if you remember but early this year I tried a bit of an experiment in another entrance about idioms,  you can find it here http://spanishconnectionedinburgh.co.uk/mixture-spanish-idioms/  it was a bit like a really interactive/deduction way, and the respond was amazing, so I thought it was about time to give a bit more than something to read and learn, let’s get a bit creative and make your brain work.

Spanish idioms with the word hand

 

I am going to give you the idioms, that they are quite similar to English ones and then you have the explanation, you have to try and link the expression with the explanation,  ready? Challenge on!

1-en buenas manos

2-dar/echar una mano

3-tener/con mano dura

4-lavarse las manos

5-echar mano (a alguien o algo)

6-con la mano en el corazón

7-(tener/con) mano izquierda

8-estar mano sobre mano

9-de segunda mano

 

 

 

Descriptions/meanings

 

a-Esto hizo Poncio Pilatos como señal para liberarse de la responsabilidad de condenar a Jesucristo

b-capturar a alguien o algo que se mueve

c-Habilidad para resolver situaciones complicadas

d-sin hacer nada

e-prestar ayuda

f-con total sinceridad

g-tratar a personas o animales de forma estricta

h-usado por otra persona

i-a cargo de alguien que va a tratar bien a alguien o a hacer un buen uso de algo.

SOLUTIONS

 

1-en buenas manos  i-a cargo de alguien que va a tratar bien a alguien o a hacer un buen uso de algo.

When we trust someone and think we are in “good hands” as you would say in English.

2-dar/echar una mano  e-prestar ayuda

Used in a situation when you need help or want to help someone.

3-tener/con mano dura  g-tratar a personas o animales de forma estricta

We use it to refer someone who is really strict.

4-lavarse las manos  a-Esto hizo Poncio Pilatos como señal para liberarse de la responsabilidad de condenar a Jesucristo

When someone does not care or does not want any responsibilities in an specific subject .

5-echar mano (a alguien o algo)   b-capturar a alguien o algo que se mueve

#watchout-It is not help someone, opposite what it looks like as its similarity with number 2 is “to catch something “

6-con la mano en el corazón  f-con total sinceridad

When someons is being honest says thing with the hand on the heart.

7-(tener/con) mano izquierda  c-Habilidad para resolver situaciones complicadas

It is used to refer someone who can manage difficult situations with calm

8-estar mano sobre mano  d-sin hacer nada

It is just like that, being hand over hand…aka as not doing anything.

9-de segunda mano  h-usado por otra persona

When something is not brand new, it has been used

#extra-sometimes we used de segunda mano when we have heard a rumour/story but not from the people involved…we have heard it from another source, a second person not really involve…

As you probably noticed I did not give you any examples I am used to for each idioms, why? Beccause this is the fun thing! It  is time for some HOMEWORK, as you know practice makes perfection so here you are some sentences, which you need to complete with one of the idioms above with the word hand mano, it is just one of the expressions for each sentences…Do you dare?
