Expressing things you feel like in Spanish

We, human beings want things all the time, we have food cravings and feelings about things we want to do or we feel like doing, in today’s short blog you will learn how to express that in Spanish in a natural way.

As I said, in today’s short blog we are learning how to express things we feel like in Spanish, or to say things we fancy doing or food cravings we have at a particular moment.

In English you can say you are craving something, you feel like doing something or you fancy doing something, in Spanish we mainly have two ways to express that, we use tener antojo de y apetecer.

Por  ejemplo

-¿tienes antojo de algo para comer?-are you craving something for lunch?

-tengo antojo de tacos hoy- I am craving tacos today.

Por ejemplo

-¿Te apetece hacer algo hoy?-Do you feel like doing something today?

-me apetece ir al cine esta tarde – I feel like/fancy going to the cinema this evening.

Normally we use tener antojo de for food cravings, it is not wrong to use it for activities or things, but it is not as commonly used.

However we can use apetecer for activities or things we fancy and also for food,  we could say

Me apetece comida tailandesa hoy or tengo antojo de comida talandesa.

And one thing to keep in mind is that in English when we use “to feel like” or “to fancy” and verbs, we use the verbs in the –ing form, the gerund, but in Spanish when the thing we want to do is a verb we use them in the infinitve after “tener antojo” y “apetecer”

Tengo antojo de comer chocolate – I am craving chocolate

Me apetece correr en el parque- I feel like running in the park.

And that is all I wanted to talk to you about today, but now as usual it is your turn, practice makes perfect so leave a comment and let me know:

-¿qué te apetece hacer hoy?

-¿tienes antojo de algo hoy? I will wait for you in the comments 🙂
